Linear Assembly Unit

Linear assembly for auto-injectors

Optimization of Assembly through Tolerance Reduction

A Robust Design review and redesign of a 3D cad model via the RD8 Software Platform was performed on a complex linear assembly unit for a fully automated aseptic assembly line for auto-injectors delivering 50 units/min with ~500 parts per unit.

The goal was a reduction of run-in and maintenance care.
(baseline: 5% of the best actuators are sorted out from the suppliers to make the station work; extensive extra work/re-work in engineering and software due to mechanical issues)

A Robust Design review was done on the 3D CAD model via the RD8 Platform, an analysis of the assembly process was done and on-the-job training in robust design methodology was provided for 5 engineers.

Impact

This approach took 8 weeks with 1.6 FTE's and delivered measurable improvements:

Improvements in tolerance chains from 18 to just 3 parts
Achieving ability to absorb 8 times more variation
Reduction of rework and improving delivery and associated costs
Reduction in scrap rate
