Robust Design Specializations

The Specialization courses

RD8 Academy offers some different specializations for advanced Robust Design. They are designed to enhance specific design focus areas and target relevant product cases.

GPS and GD&T Tolerances:
Application and Analysis

This course gives mechanical engineers a practical foundation for managing variation and defining precise product requirements. Participants explore how tolerances influence function, manufacturing outcomes, and overall design robustness.
Through real examples and guided exercises, you will navigate GPS standards, work confidently with datums, and make informed decisions about tolerance schemes.

Pricing and practical information can be seen in the pricing table on the RD8 Academy front page.

Learning Objectives

Understand Fundamental Tolerance Concepts
Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Principles
Perform Tolerance Stack-Up Analysis
Design for Manufacturability (DFM) with Precision Tolerances
Understand ISO and GPS Standards
Interpret and Modify Technical Drawings Based on Standards
Collaborate Effectively in Tolerance Design

DFA - Assembly

This course focuses on practical methods for simplifying and streamlining product assembly. Participants learn how design choices shape assembly effort, explore common assembly routes, and consider how automation influences assembly strategy.
The session emphasizes creating products that are easy, efficient, and reliable to assemble, supported by principles that strengthen overall design robustness.

Pricing and practical information can be seen in the pricing table on the RD8 Academy front page.

Learning Objectives

Understand the basics of assembly is and what DFA includes
Understand the differences between Manual, Semi-automatic and automatic (high-volume) assembly
Apply the RD8 DFA check-list to review the suitability for assembly of an existing product
Understand what drives a good DFA score and how it can be evaluated across products
Apply the DFA guidelines and criteria to improve your product for DFA
Use the DFA cheat-sheet to efficiently review or design products that are optimized for DFA

Kinematics Pro

This course provides a practical foundation for evaluating mechanical systems through kinematic and robust design thinking. Participants learn to break down complex products into meaningful sub‑systems, uncover over‑constraints, and clarify the functional intent of mechanisms. The training emphasizes using motion principles, flexibility, and structured iteration to guide design decisions. Through the RD8 platform and hands‑on analysis, engineers gain the tools to assess robustness, resolve interface challenges, and create mechanisms that perform reliably under real‑world conditions.

Pricing and practical information can be seen in the pricing table on the RD8 Academy front page.

Learning Objectives

Analyze an interface with RD8 Robust Design Principles
Review complex mechanical products/systems by kinematic principles and identify issues
identify sub-systems and know how to handle them
Define the intent of a mechanical products/system by kinematic principles to satisfy the Kutzbach criterion
Understand how to quantify the robustness of any given mechanical product
Know how to handle identified over-constraints
Be able to use flexibility to your advantage
Be able to use iterations and  tracking the design process

The RD8 Software

The RD8 Tolerance Analysis Software is the perfect tool for implementing the Robust Design principles and methods acquired in the Robust Design courses. The software makes complex assemblies easy and manages complicated calculations for you.
RD8 Academy also offers a thorough onboarding course to the use of our software platform.
